Gameplay Notes
Like most 2D platformers, go to the right to reach the end goal. However, in secret, this is a trap-filled puzzle game, masquerading as a Super Mario rip-off.
Move horizontally with LEFT and RIGHT. Press A to jump. Hold B to run. With high enough horizontal momentum, your jumps will automatically go higher.
You can activate most blocks by jumping into them from below, or by kicking shells into them. Some blocks contain items and others may break. The 'ON/OFF' block can affect numerous other obstacles.
The blue flags are checkpoints, which become active upon touch. Once activated, if you lose a life, your next life will begin from the last one you touched.
You can defeat most enemies by jumping on them. There is no requirement of defeating all encountered enemies in order to progress. (Unlike Toads.)
Practice difficulty has infinite lives. Cat difficulty has nine. You cannot beat the game on Practice difficulty. Collect a hundred coins to gain an extra life.
Some pipes can be entered with DOWN or UP.
What is this game?
"Syobon" is a 'joke' 2D puzzle-platformer. It's based on Shobon no Action.
Programming Notes
Shobon no Action mimicks the original Super Mario Bros level design. This game mimicks Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan)'s level design. This game is also much more difficult to complete; akin to what Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan) is infamous for.
All blocks have a multitude of variables tied to them, most of which can cross-interact for several combined effects. Blocks become familiar, but they never become predictable, resulting in trial-and-error forever remaining as the player's core progression method.
